A statement from the Bishop of Guildford on the death of Pope Francis

Bishop Andrew has shared the following message following the death of Pope Francis at aged 88.

"Pope Francis was an inspiration to hundreds of millions both within and beyond the Roman Catholic church, and we give thanks for his warm compassion, simplicity of life, commitment to God’s Creation and deep joy in the gospel of Jesus Christ, which he commended so consistently and winsomely.

"It seems appropriate that he has been welcomed home in this resurrection season, so shortly after blessing the Easter pilgrims in Rome; and while we rejoice in a life well lived, we pray for all who mourn his passing."

- The Right Reverend Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford

The Very Reverend Bob Cooper, Dean of Guildford also published a statement.

"It is with deep sorrow that we at Guildford Cathedral mourn the death of Pope Francis, a profoundly humble and courageous servant of Christ.

"His life was marked by an unwavering commitment to the poor, the marginalised, and those so often overlooked by society. Pope Francis reminded us, through word and action, of the Gospel’s radical call to compassion and justice. His papacy brought the light of Christ into places of suffering and isolation, challenging all Christians to embody mercy and grace in a hurting world. His deep pastoral heart and simplicity touched countless lives across denominations and faiths.

"We give thanks for his extraordinary witness and pray for all who mourn him, especially our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters. May he rest in the eternal peace of the God he so faithfully served."

-The Very Reverend Bob Cooper, Dean of Guildford
