Date: 25 November 2022
Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, White Ribbon Day and the start of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
These all fall at a particularly significant moment with the start of the men’s FIFA World Cup. Past studies have shown that reported domestic abuse incidents were over a third higher on days England lost a World Cup match than on days England wasn't playing and 26% higher when the team won or drew.
It’s well-known that everyone can play a part in safeguarding ourselves and others, and there are some resources to helpfully guide us, build awareness and make a difference over the next 16 days.
Nationally, the Church of England will be sharing stories daily from survivors of domestic abuse and those supporting survivors to help raise awareness. You can also visit their 16 Days of Activism page to book on and join in with online discussions and training.
Locally, Surrey Against Domestic Abuse and Your Sanctuary offer some further resources to build your knowledge base yet again around domestic abuse, but also helpful signposting for those threatened by domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse affects women and men of all ages, ethnicities, orientations, and income levels, regardless of ability. It may not be easy to accept that a loved one can behave so aggressively. Everyone has the right to live a life free from threats, violence and abuse, and help is available.
You can call Surrey’s Domestic Abuse helpline provided by Your Sanctuary on 01483 776822 or use the Your Sanctuary confidential online chat to get advice, signposting and information just as you would over the phone. In an emergency, you should always call 999.
Keep an eye on our social media and comms channels over the next 16 days as we share stories and other resources to help make a difference.
