Playing a wide variety of sports is the way the Youth Team at St Peter’s Farnborough are using to reach out to young people in their community.
“Our vision is to love each other, love God and love the world,” says Chloe Pollington, St Peter’s Youth Minister. “We wanted to focus on loving the world and sports are such a great way of engaging with a whole range of young people.
The new Sports Club meets at a local secondary school and each week has a go at a different sport. “So far we’ve tried ultimate frisbee, indoor cricket, football, basketball and netball. We try to make it really accessible for a range of sporting abilities and have loved trying different sports,” says Chloe.
The youth group have seen young people that they previously hadn’t had contact with, as well as those from church.
Ethan, who’s in year 10, says, “It is great to play sports and socialise with other young people at the same time.” And Zoe, in year 9 says, “It’s nice to spend my Thursday evenings doing something fun, rather than sitting at home doing nothing. It’s also been really nice to see some new faces.”
Chloe hopes to see this group grow over the coming months. The focus will be on those who have no connection with church, so that they may have the opportunity to meet Christians, who will love and support them.
