The Bishop of Guildford’s Community Fund’s annual Lent Appeal starts this week. Usually, the appeal would put the funds raised solely towards local projects, but this year it’s seeking to spread its support even further.
The news and scenes following the earthquake in Turkey and Syria have left many feeling helpless, wondering what can be done to help. Thousands of homes, hospitals, schools and other buildings have collapsed, and many have been left without shelter in freezing winter conditions.
Nearer to home, those who live in pockets of deprivation within the diocese are being hit particularly hard by the current cost of living crisis and strains on our public services.
The Fund, which Bishop Andrew Watson is Chairman of, is asking parishes and individuals to donate to this year’s appeal and support both the aid efforts of those affected by the earthquake and local projects initiated by our churches.
Donations will be shared between the regular local work BGCF does across the diocese in supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable people, and the work being done by Christian Aid and Tearfund in Turkey and Syria.
