Have you made space to celebrate and mark Black History Month this October?
The story of Black communities has often been told through lenses that often misrepresent, oversimplify, or entirely overlook the rich and diverse experiences of those who lived it. Under the national theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives', we are urged to take control of our stories, celebrate our heritage, and ensure our voices are heard. A comprehensive 2024 resource pack can be downloaded from the Black History Month website.
Join Judah Garrison (Parish Worker at St John’s Egham), Janet Williams (Children and Families’ Pastor and Ordinand in St John’s Stoke), Revd Dr Oluwapelumi O. Adeyemi (minister supporting St Francis Westborough), Revd Alwyn Pereira (St Michael’s & The Ascension, Aldershot). They kick off Black History Month celebrating diversity in the church and in our diocese.
We have worked with our contributors to give you three short films for Black History Month. The three videos explore:
- recognising and celebrating black voices in the church
- welcome
- belonging
They each issue a challenge for churches. The videos are designed to be played during a service or in a home group.
Register to get access to the Black History Month videos to use in your church.
The Church of England has also shared a prayer for Black History Month and Liturgical Resources for Black History Month. These include Services of the Word, a Eucharistic service, Prayers of Lament and of Commission, and links to further resources for Bible studies, youth work, Messy Church, and music.
If you are doing something to mark Black History Month or want to celebrate a Black voice in our diocese, please let our Communications team know so they can share wider.
