Heritage Open Days is England’s largest community-led festival of history and culture, celebrating local heritage and traditions.

Many churches in the diocese, as well as other local historical sites, will be opening their doors and running events as part of the Heritage Open Days from Friday 6 September to Sunday 15 September. Visitors near and far are invited to come and learn more about our wonderful places of worship.

The activities on offer include guided tours and talks, bell-ringing demonstrations, tower tours, and family-friendly trails and quizzes. You might even be lucky enough to get a free tea and cake at some locations!

Some church buildings have a history that goes back centuries, including the oldest building in Guildford (St Mary’s), a Saxon church (Albury) and an ancient 1,300-year-old yew tree in a churchyard (Little Bookham). Others boast significant features, including unique murals (Hale), one of the tallest spires in England (Dorking) and the smallest parish church in Surrey (Wanborough).

All Saints’ Church in Banstead is one of the many places of worship steeped in centuries-old history. Susan, a member of the Organising Team, shares, “The church has been at the heart of Banstead Village for over 800 years. Changes to the political authority, social structures and beliefs were reflected by changes to the church building, its adornments and its worship.”

All of this can be explored through various activities taking place on Saturday 14 September. All Saints’ vicar, Revd Kate Blake, and others will also be offering prayer for those who may like it on the day.

Guildford Cathedral will also be hosting a number of events on Saturday 7 September. “This is a great opportunity to find out more about the Peoples Cathedral.” Says Nicola Pratt, Head of Development at the cathedral. “Come hear about how we came to be on a Guided Tour or, as a special event for the Heritage Open Day, discover what is under the nave floor on a Crypt Tour. See the original chapel which was used during the Second World War, where the choir rehearse, possibly the world's most secure cleaning cupboard and some other hidden gems.” Booking early is essential as not to miss out.

Around 35 churches in the diocese are hosting events across the 10 days at various times, so do follow the list of links below for more details on opening times and the activities available.
