You will hopefully see plenty of purple being worn today as people mark Domestic Violence Awareness Day.
Did you know one in three women and one in six men in Surrey will experience some form of domestic abuse? Or that every year 750,000 children witness family abuse and in half of these cases, they are physically harmed?*
A research report from Women’s Aid, looking at children and young people’s understanding of domestic abuse, shows that 70% of children and young people would seek support if affected by domestic abuse. However, 61% of them were unsure or did not know where to go for this. With 35% of adults recalling no education about domestic abuse in school, the report calls for relationships, health and sex education (RSHE) to be strengthened.
You can read the full report here.
Another helpful resource is the NSPCC’s Health and unhealthy relationships learning tool.
We encourage you to get involved by building your understanding of domestic violence and wearing purple to show your support.
