Rachel Johnson is one of the new deacons being ordained at Guildford Cathedral on Sunday 2nd July and shares her story of being called to church ministry.
"My first inkling that God was calling me to ordination was part-way through my Licensed Lay Ministry training. It was a small but persistent voice, confirmed by a word from a friend. I couldn’t imagine myself as an ordained minister but I knew that if that was God’s plan for me then God would make it clear at the right time, and that time came during a church quiet day, when God simply said, ‘Trust my voice’. So I gathered my courage to speak to my vicar and found he’d been thinking the same thing. God has been so gracious and led me one step at a time.
Ever since my first terrifying steps in ministry, I’ve been upheld by 2 Corinthians 12:9 ‘But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.’"
