Statement to Church schools following the resignation of the Archbishop

Statement from the Diocesan Director of Education, Canon Alex Tear:

Most of you will be aware that yesterday, Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury issued a statement which announced his resignation.

In light of this announcement, I wanted to write to all our Church schools and Academy Trusts to re-affirm our diocesan commitment to safeguarding in all aspects of our work and especially the safeguarding of children and young people in our Church schools and in other settings.

The findings of the Makin review into the abuse of young men by John Smyth highlight the importance of creating a culture of safeguarding within our own Church schools and trusts and demonstrate the need for Church schools leaders and staff to continue to remain vigilant in order to protect the children and young people in our care.

"The Makin review highlights the importance of listening carefully to the voices of children and young people when they make disclosures to the adults in whom they put their trust and recognising that for the victims and survivors of abuse, their experiences continue to be both traumatic and life-changing.

Bishop Andrew, who himself was a victim of abuse by John Smyth, has stated:

"On the ground, our churches have been making significant improvements in our safeguarding practice: and I am deeply grateful for the skill and commitment of our Parish Safeguarding Officers, and the victim-centred focus of our Safeguarding team at Church House, in whom I have great confidence. I'd encourage us all to redouble our efforts in this regard, in pursuit of our commitment to the safest of churches, schools and communities: and please do flag up even the most tentative of concerns with the team”
