The Very Reverend Bob Cooper, known as Bob, has been installed as the new Dean of Guildford. The Installation Service took place on Sunday, 26 January 2025, in the presence of clergy, dignitaries, and members of the wider community.
The ceremony was a momentous occasion for the Cathedral and the Diocese of Guildford, marking the beginning of Bob's leadership at a pivotal time for the community. The service presided over by The Right Reverend Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford, included traditional liturgy, magnificent music from the Cathedral Choir and brass septet Septura, and a warm welcome from representatives of local civic and faith groups.
Bob brings a wealth of experience to Guildford Cathedral, having previously served as the Archdeacon of Sunderland, where he was instrumental in fostering community engagement and championing key outreach initiatives. His vision for Guildford Cathedral focuses on deepening its role as a beacon of worship, heritage, and community service.
In his sermon, Bob spoke about how the 'People’s Cathedral’ is a place of deep spirituality, the gate of Heaven, and a place of welcome for all.
Reflecting on this new chapter, Bob said: “I am deeply honoured to join Guildford Cathedral as Dean. This sacred space holds a special place in the hearts of many, and I look forward to working with the congregation, the Diocese, and the wider community to further our shared mission of faith, service, and hope.”
Rt Rev Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford said:
“I am delighted that Bob has joined us in the Diocese in a challenging but exciting time in the life of our beloved Cathedral. Bob’s gifts and experience closely match the needs of the Cathedral community at this time, and I pray that his time among us might prove fruitful and joyful”
The installation of Dean Bob marks an exciting new era for Guildford Cathedral, building on its rich history and commitment to welcome, spirituality, and outreach. As Dean, Bob will oversee the Cathedral’s worship, operations, and ongoing efforts to serve as a place of solace and inspiration for all.
As Guildford Cathedral approaches its 65th anniversary in May 2026, this new leadership promises to further strengthen its role as a cornerstone of the community and a symbol of faith and resilience.
