Last Thursday, 26 January, 12 Church of England schools from across the Diocese of Guildford took part in an Eco Day at Guildford Cathedral. The day was jointly organised by Guildford Diocesan Education Team and Guildford Cathedral.
All the pupils that attended are members of their school’s Eco team and are particularly passionate and involved in the environmental agenda. The purpose of the day was to help the children and staff to think about the critical question, “Why does it matter for Christians to care for God’s world?”
The full day of activities for the five to seven-year-olds included prayer and reflection stations that children could engage with. The huge globe was a definite focal point of the day and the children learnt all about the effects of CO2 on our planet, and were encouraged to think about reusing and recycling items to reduce waste.
Becki Hartley, Head of Family Engagement and Schools at Guildford Cathedral commented: “It was a pleasure to host and organise such a special day. It was a joy to see the children having fun, while learning such important messages about our environment.”
The day finished with an act of Collective Worship led by the Diocesan Education Team and The Very Reverend Dianna Gwilliams, Dean of Guildford Cathedral. It gave the pupils the chance to reflect on the day with prayers and singing, as they prepared to return to school with the positive news that each small thing they can do, can make a big difference in our world.
