Hear Here clinics growing from strength to strength

Hear Here clinics across the diocese are being accessed by an increasing number of people in our parishes.

The community hearing aid clinics, which have been running for over 10 years in partnership with the Diocese of Guildford, Sight for Surrey and the NHS, have seen a rise of almost 35% of visitors in the last year. The clinics support those suffering from hearing loss and wearing hearing aids to get the best from their devices.

At the Hear Here clinics, NHS audiology-trained volunteers offer a range of services, including advice and practical help on cleaning, battery replacements, re-tubing and checking fitment.

As well as an increase in those accessing Hear Here, the diocese also saw seven new clinics open in 2024. Having realised a need in the local community, St John’s Church in Egham was one of those seven, running their first clinic in May 2024.

Janice Seidlitz, the Hear Here Champion at St John’s, shares her story and the reason for setting up the clinic:

“My own hearing started to deteriorate, and I went through the whole process of getting hearing aids fitted. It took a very long time. It was very frustrating, and I realised there was a gap that somebody needed to fill. I thought, if I get the training, I'll be able to do it myself and help others.”

With the ever-growing pressure on NHS resources, the Hear Here volunteer-led community-based clinics offer a lifeline for many. Janice says that they have had clients telling them that the help they offer has been ‘life changing’.

“Clients come in with a challenge that has bewildered them. They have been unable to use their hearing aids.” Janice continues, “When they leave, they are more satisfied and confident, which for them is potentially life-altering for the better.

“Also, we recognise that we too are building up people and technical skills that are relevant to our own well-being. Which is the thing that has really surprised me. It affects us as people, so it's a win-win situation.”

Martyna Zabka Mustafa started as the Hear Here Project Lead four months ago and says, “I’ve met so many inspiring volunteers. We’re proud to have over 50 volunteer-led clinics that supported nearly 6,000 people last year. Our dedicated Hear Here Champions find fulfilment in building lasting relationships with patients, getting positive feedback, and making a great impact in people's lives.

“The clinics also value the opportunity to build strong, supportive teams of volunteers who work together to make a real difference and grow their local community. I’m excited to see this project flourish even more in 2025!"

“One of our shared missions is to combat isolation and loneliness by promoting accessible drop-in hubs within the community.” Says Justine Jasper, Head of Charity Services at Sight for Surrey. “Belinda Bowman, our Volunteer Manager, and I recently presented at a Hear Here volunteer event, showcasing an overview of the vital services our charity offers. Together, we are strengthening connections, raising awareness and ensuring that no one faces sensory loss alone."

St John’s Hear Here clinic is looking to the future to serve a more diverse demographic, recognising that younger people are being diagnosed with hearing loss early on.
